How much water does a horse need per day?
A large horse needs around 5 litres of water per 100 kg body weight for normal metabolism, so a 600 kg horse needs at least 30 litres. With light work this is 30 to 40 litres, with hard work 50 to 80 litres.
If the outside temperature rises by five degrees, the requirement increases by 15 to 20 per cent according to the German Equestrian Federation (FN). So plan buckets and troughs generously, especially in summer.
Do horses prefer to drink from a bucket or an automatic drinker?
Horses are suction drinkers and prefer to drink from an open water surface with the head lowered. Troughs or buckets holding more than 5 litres are closer to this behaviour than small drinking bowls with a push flap.
Automatic drinkers should deliver at least 8, ideally over 10 litres per minute. You can easily check this with a bucket and a stopwatch for one minute.
How often should I clean water buckets and troughs?
You should empty and thoroughly clean open water containers every two to three days so that no biofilm can form. In summer bacteria grow particularly quickly.
Use a soft sponge rather than a hard brush for this, because scratches make it easier for new deposits to adhere. Horses have a very fine sense of smell and will turn down stale or dirty water.
What can I do if my horse does not drink at a competition?
Take water from home with you in buckets or water containers, because unfamiliar water tastes and smells different. Some horses also drink better if there is a dash of apple juice in the water.
Soaked feed such as hay cubes provides additional fluid. A sturdy competition bucket with a hanging bracket can be securely fastened in the trailer or in the stable at the show.
