What does my horse need overreach boots for?
Overreach boots primarily protect your horse from striking into the heel bulbs or pasterns of the front legs with the hind hooves or from pulling off a horseshoe. The coronet band and heel bulbs are particularly at risk.
They are useful for energetic work in training and competition, for playtime in the field and paddock, during transport and while injuries in the coronet or heel area are healing.
How do I find the right size in overreach boots?
Overreach boots fit correctly when they loosely encircle the coronet band with about a finger’s width of space and, when the horse is standing, end just above the ground without dragging. Boots that are too small rub or restrict movement, boots that are too large slip and are easily lost.
Many manufacturers offer sizes from S to XL, which are based on hoof width. It is best to measure after trimming or shoeing and, if in doubt, try two sizes.
Rubber, neoprene or hook-and-loop: which overreach boots are right?
For everyday use, overreach boots made from rubber or neoprene are suitable because they are flexible, robust and water-repellent. Models with hook-and-loop fastenings are particularly easy to put on and take off.
Overreach boots with a leather look appear more elegant and are popular for competitions.
How do I care for overreach boots properly?
Clean overreach boots regularly and remove sand and dirt from the inside. Foreign bodies that have got inside can quickly cause rubs on the coronet band.
Neoprene models must be dried thoroughly after washing so that no mould forms. While doing so, also check fastenings and material for cracks.
