How tight can I fasten the noseband?
There must be space for at least two fingers between the noseband and the bridge of the nose. This two-finger rule is also laid down in the German competition rules (LPO). Your horse needs room to be able to chew: about 10 mm between the molars and 17 mm between the incisors.
In a study by CAVALLO on 100 horses, more than half of the nosebands were too tight. With the flash noseband, the flash strap is often done up too tightly. The drop noseband is always fastened with more than two fingers of room.
Cavesson, drop or flash: which noseband fits?
The cavesson noseband fits most horses, including those with a small head and short mouth. It sits about 2–3 cm below the cheekbone.
The drop noseband is fastened below the bit rings in the chin groove, is more suitable for large heads and must not be used with a curb bit. The flash noseband adds a thin flash strap to the cavesson. With the grackle noseband the straps cross over the bridge of the nose and leave the nostrils free.
How do I adjust the browband and throatlatch correctly?
The browband sits just below the ears and must not be too short, otherwise it will press on the ears. It should lie loosely, but keep the bridle in position.
A fist should fit between the throatlatch and the neck so that your horse has sufficient freedom of movement in the throat area. Adjust the cheekpieces evenly on both sides. For adjustments, repairs and spare parts, Ahrens Reitsport offers an after-sales service.
How do I recognise that the noseband is causing pressure?
Typical warning signs are flared, tense nostrils, tightly pressed lips, a fixed stare and head tossing. A noseband that is fastened too tightly can trigger tension that continues from the head to the tail.
Thick rubber padding does not solve the problem, because the horse works against it. A correctly fastened, well fitting noseband is more sensible. If problems persist you should consult your vet.
