How much hay does my horse need per day?
At least 1.5 to 2 kg of forage per 100 kg body weight, so for a 600 kg Warmblood this means around 15 kg of hay per day. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) gives this amount as the lower limit for a healthy digestive system.
Leipzig University works on the basis of at least 1.5 kg of dry matter per 100 kg body weight. This corresponds to about 1.7 kg of hay or around 2 kg of the wetter haylage. For many leisure horses, 2 to 2.5 kg of hay per 100 kg already provides enough energy.
Can I replace part of the hay with straw?
Yes, straw can cover up to 30–40% of the forage ration and is particularly suitable for good doers and overweight horses. One possible combination is 1 kg of hay and 0.5 kg of straw per 100 kg body weight.
Because straw is more lignified, you should allow your horse to get used to it slowly and ideally feed it mixed with hay. This reduces the risk of impaction colic.
What is part of my horse’s daily care routine?
You should groom your horse and pick out the hooves every day, ideally before and after every ride. Grooming lets you spot injuries, parasites or skin changes at an early stage, and a clean coat helps prevent rubs under the saddle.
It is best to apply hoof oil to a damp hoof. The farrier should work on the hooves roughly every six to eight weeks.
How often do I need to care for my saddle and bridle?
Leather that is used for riding regularly should be cleaned about once a week and greased if necessary. First remove dirt and sweat with a damp sponge and saddle soap, then apply some leather grease or balm to dry leather.
