How do I recognise a good winter riding boot?
A good winter riding boot is lined in the shaft and foot area, is breathable and has a thick sole with a coarse tread. The sole keeps your foot away from the cold ground, and the tread delays the cold reaching your foot.
Breathability is just as important as warmth, because damp feet quickly get cold. Waterproof and at the same time breathable materials keep out moisture from outside and allow sweat to escape.
How do I find the right size for winter riding boots?
In addition to your shoe size you need your calf circumference at the widest point, measured while wearing riding breeches, and the shaft height, measured when sitting from the floor up to the knee. Winter riding boots must not be too tight, because a small air cushion provides extra insulation.
Leather shafts drop a little over time, so new boots can initially be one to two centimetres higher. If no model fits, Ahrens Reitsport offers made-to-measure boots, with measurements taken in our shop in Tangstedt.
Which socks keep you warm in winter riding boots?
Your feet stay warmest with two layers: a thin sports sock made from a synthetic blend, and on top a high-quality merino sock. The first layer distributes moisture, the wool keeps you warm even when damp.
Cotton socks are not ideal in winter because they store moisture. If you also wear thermal underwear and move your toes from time to time, this supports circulation and keeps your feet warm for longer.
Do winter riding boots fit in my stirrups?
You should check this, because winter riding boots often have a wider, thicker sole. Your foot must be able to turn and move slightly in the stirrup without jamming, and there should be at least half a centimetre of space at the sides.
A small heel is also important, because it prevents your foot from slipping through the stirrup. If the boot jams in the stirrup, a wider stirrup is the safer solution.
