What makes a winter riding glove warm?

Above all the insulation in the lining: fine fibres trap air and so keep the body heat around your hand. Good insulating materials allow moisture to escape to the outside so that your hand does not get chilled in its own sweat.

Lining materials include synthetic fabrics such as fleece or special microfibre insulations, but also wool. Natural fibres such as wool keep you warm while remaining breathable. For everyday riding it is also important that the glove gives you enough feel on the reins despite the lining.

How tight can a winter glove be?

It should fit closely but not be tight. A glove that is too tight restricts blood circulation and therefore keeps you less warm because less warm blood reaches your fingers.

A slightly longer cuff that disappears under the jacket sleeve is practical so that no skin is exposed at the wrist. You determine your size as with summer gloves by measuring the circumference of your hand below the knuckles. It is best to try on winter gloves with reins or a lead rope in your hand.

Which winter glove is suitable for rain and snow?

In wet conditions, windproof and water-repellent models are the better choice. Gloves made of lambskin leather with sheepskin lining are very warm, but are less suitable for damp weather because moisture can make the natural material stiff over time.

For cold, dry days in the yard or out hacking, lined leather gloves are very comfortable. If you ride in all weathers, you are often best off with synthetic, water-repellent winter riding gloves.

How do I dry wet winter gloves properly?

Slowly and at room temperature, not on the radiator and not in the sun. Too much heat makes leather in particular hard and brittle.

After wearing leather gloves, pull them into shape briefly so that they retain their fit. For synthetic models, follow the care label, because some can be washed and others cannot. A second pair to alternate is practical in winter so that each pair can dry out completely.
