What is the difference between a stable rug and a turnout rug?
The most important difference is the outer material: stable rugs are not waterproof and are therefore intended for the stable only, turnout rugs have a waterproof outer layer. In the stable your horse does not need protection from the rain, which is why stable rugs are lighter.
Stable rugs are quilted and filled to provide warmth. You should not use them in the field, because they let moisture through.
Does my horse need a warmer rug in the stable than in the field?
Yes, as a rule of thumb a horse in the stable benefits from a slightly warmer rug than outside at the same temperatures. This rule of thumb is mentioned by the British specialist magazine Horse & Hound.
Nevertheless, it is better for the horse to be a little too cool than too warm. Check with your hand under the rug behind the withers whether the coat stays dry.
What is a liner good for?
A liner, also called an under-rug, increases the warmth of an existing rug without you having to buy a second thick rug. Many manufacturers offer liners with different fills that can be attached under matching outer rugs.
This way you can turn a lightweight rug into a warm one if needed. On very cold days a stable rug can also be worn under a waterproof turnout rug.
What fill should a stable rug have?
The appropriate fill depends on your horse’s clip, the stable temperature and how sensitive your horse is to the cold. Horseware roughly divides rugs into lightweight models up to 100 g, medium-weight around 150–250 g and warm rugs with 300 g and more.
A clipped horse in a cold stable needs more fill than a horse with its winter coat. Unclipped horses with a thick coat often do not need a rug in the stable at all.
