What size do I need for children’s riding clothing?
Children’s sizes are based on height in centimetres: size 140 fits a child up to around 140 cm. The best way to measure your child is to stand them against a wall and measure from the top of the head to the floor.
The age information in size charts is only a rough guide because children grow at different rates. For jumpers and jackets, the chest measurement is also helpful, especially if there needs to be room for another layer underneath.
Why do children’s jackets not have cords on the hood?
Cords and drawstrings around the head and neck area are not permitted on children’s clothing up to about seven years of age (up to size 134) under standard EN 14682. They can get caught on equipment, doors or branches, and there have been serious accidents as a result.
There are also limits on the length and position of such strings for older children. Clothing without loose cords is also an extra safety factor in the yard, with all its hooks and rings.
Which materials are suitable for children’s riding jumpers and jackets?
Technical fabrics such as polyester-based fleece are very suitable because they do not soak up water and they dry quickly. Cotton, on the other hand, absorbs sweat and releases it only slowly, which makes it easier for the child to get chilled after riding.
The ideal solution is a combination of a close-fitting technical base layer, a warming mid-layer and a weatherproof jacket. This makes it easy to adjust clothing to suit temperature and activity levels.
How do I make sure my child is seen in the dark?
Reflective elements on a jacket or gilet make children visible to drivers much earlier at dusk. For hacks during the darker months, experts recommend a reflective or hi-vis gilet, supplemented with reflective equipment on the horse.
It is important to be visible from the front, from behind and from the side. Horse and child should also be well used to traffic before they go out at dusk.
