Down or synthetic fibre: which quilted gilet is better for the stable?
For dry cold, down gives the best warmth for a very low weight, while synthetic fibres cope better with damp weather at the yard. Down loses its insulating performance as soon as it becomes damp.
Synthetic fills, on the other hand, keep you reliably warm even when wet and dry more quickly. There are now also blends of down and synthetic fibres that are intended to combine both advantages. If you work outside a lot in rain or fog, synthetic fibre is often the better option.
How long does a heated gilet stay warm?
That depends on the power bank and the heat setting. With a 5,000 mAh power bank you can get up to four hours of warmth. On many models the heated area is on the back, from the upper back down to the waist.
The temperature can usually be adjusted from the outside in several stages. Stretch side panels ensure that the gilet fits closely so the warmth stays close to your body. Note that the power bank is not included with some gilets.
How do I wash a down gilet correctly?
On a delicates cycle at the temperature stated on the label, usually 30 °C, using a liquid delicate or down detergent. Close all zips and hook-and-loop fastenings first.
Afterwards the gilet dries best in the tumble dryer at a low temperature with two to three tennis balls that fluff up the down again. Without a tumble dryer, hang it up and shake it out regularly so that the fill does not clump. As a rule of thumb: wash as rarely as possible and as often as necessary.
Can a heated gilet go in the washing machine?
Many heated gilets can go in the machine, for example on a delicates cycle at 30 °C, if the label allows it. Remove the power bank first.
The plug and power bank must not get wet and may only be reconnected when they are completely dry. Dry the gilet hanging up and away from direct heat. Read the manufacturer’s instructions before the first wash, because some models are only suitable for handwashing.
