Which socks are best to wear under tall riding boots?
Ideally thin, knee-length riding socks made of elastic technical fabric with a flat toe seam. They add hardly any bulk in the leg, so the riding boots fit just as they did when you tried them on, and the smooth seam helps prevent pressure points.
Many models consist of a mix of polyamide, polyester, cotton and a little elastane, which keeps the sock smooth against your calf. They are usually washed at 30 °C, inside out and without a tumble dryer. It is best to try new riding boots on with exactly the socks that you will later wear for riding.
Am I allowed to ride in a cap or beanie instead of a riding helmet?
No, in the saddle you should always wear a riding helmet certified to EN 1384. Caps and beanies are intended for when you are on the ground, for example when grooming, in the stable or as a spectator at a competition.
The German Equestrian Federation (FN) lists a well-fitting, correctly fastened riding helmet as an essential basic item of equipment and explicitly points out that bicycle helmets are unsuitable for riding. A cap has no place under the helmet either, because the helmet only protects if it sits firmly on the head without any play.
How can I be seen better when hacking out at dusk?
With light colours and reflective accessories on rider and horse, for example hi-vis vests, bands or reflective brushing boots. Under § 28 of the German Road Traffic Regulations (Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung), riders are road users and must observe the general traffic rules.
Anyone leading a horse on the road at dusk or in the dark must also carry a non-dazzling white light. It is carried on the left-hand side and must be clearly visible to the front and the rear. Reflective material complements such a light, but does not replace it.
What basic items should I have in a grooming bag?
A hoof pick, rubber or plastic curry comb, body brush, dandy brush, mane comb or mane brush and a sweat scraper form the basis. The magazine of the German Equestrian Federation (FN) also lists these items as basic equipment for daily grooming.
For the hooves you will also need hoof grease, hoof balm or hoof oil with a brush, plus a water brush and a pair of scissors. A bag with several compartments keeps the brushes separate and ready to hand, whether at the grooming area, in the trailer or at a competition.
