Why should I use a mounting block?
A mounting block relieves the strain on your horse’s back significantly. In a British study, the load when mounting from the ground was more than twice as high as with a mounting block and lasted around three times as long.
Just before you sit down, mounting from the ground creates high pressure peaks on the right at the withers and on the left in the loin area. With a mounting block these lateral forces are largely eliminated.
How high should a mounting block be?
The higher the mounting block, the lower the pressure on the horse’s back. The ideal height is one where you only swing your leg over your horse’s back without putting weight in the stirrup.
In the study, heights of 28 cm and 58 cm were compared with mounting from the ground, and the higher option performed best.
Is a salt lick enough for my horse?
For most horses, a simple salt lick made from compressed table salt is completely sufficient. An adult Warmblood needs around 3.5 g of sodium and 2 g of chloride per day, and this amount is usually already contained in about 6 kg of meadow hay.
However, when a horse sweats it loses significantly more sodium. With free access to the salt lick it can make up for this loss as needed. Adding large amounts of salt directly to the feed is not advisable. As little as 50 g extra per day can put a strain on the metabolism.
Salt lick or mineral lick: which is better?
Experts usually recommend a pure salt lick, because mineral licks can confuse the horse when it tries to gauge its actual need for salt. Minerals and vitamins can be supplied more precisely with a suitable mineral feed.
Attach the lick in a holder in a fixed place. Where foals are kept in the same stable it must be out of reach of the youngsters, because they do not yet have a feel for their salt requirement.
