How does a cooler rug work?
A cooler rug wicks moisture away from the coat to the outside so that your horse does not get chilled after training. Almost all models are made of polyester-based fleece, which, unlike cotton, does not soak up water and releases dampness again quickly.
Laboratory tests have confirmed that cooler rugs really do transport sweat to the outside. Hardy horses can also dry off without a rug in mild temperatures.
How long does the cooler rug stay on the horse?
Leave the rug on until the coat feels dry and the outside of the rug is damp. At that point it has carried the moisture outwards and can be removed.
Let your horse cool down under a roof so that rain does not soak the rug from the outside. Rugging is particularly important in frosty, windy conditions and for horses that are prone to chills.
What size cooler rug does my horse need?
In Germany you measure from the highest point of the withers to the top of the tail and add 10 cm. If no size fits exactly, choose the slightly larger one so that nothing rubs.
The rug must not press on the withers. Slide your hand between coat and rug while your horse is eating. If you can pull it out easily, the rug fits correctly.
How do I wash a fleece cooler rug?
Wash fleece cooler rugs at a maximum of 30–40 °C with a mild detergent and without fabric softener. Before washing, brush off hair and dirt with an anti-static brush and close all hook-and-loop fastenings.
Air dry the rug and do not tumble dry it, because too much heat will damage the material. Regular washing also reduces the level of germs.
