How should a fly mask fit correctly?
There should be two to three centimetres of space between the eyelashes and the mask, while the mask should lie close to the nose and jaw. This prevents flies from getting underneath and stops the mesh from rubbing on the eyes.
Your horse needs enough room around the ears to move them freely. A well fitting mask stays in place even when the horse shakes its head or rolls. If it slips, it can block the horse’s vision and cause it to panic.
Why do horses need a fly mask at all?
Flies are attracted to tear fluid and can transmit bacteria or trigger painful conjunctivitis. A fly mask keeps them away from the eyes and face.
Soft fleece edging helps to prevent rubbing. Check the eyes under the mask at least once a day, because a mask that has slipped or is pressing can itself cause injuries.
With ears, without ears or with nose cover: which fly mask is suitable?
Masks with ear protection also keep insects away from that area, while models without ears are intended for horses that are sensitive around their ears. A nose cover, often removable, gives additional protection from the sun for light-skinned horses.
For horses with a thin forelock there are masks with a forelock opening. Some models also offer certified UV protection for the eye area.
Fine or coarse mesh: which is better?
Fine, elastic mesh is pleasantly soft but less robust, while stiffer mesh with larger holes is more hard-wearing but often less comfortable. Which version is suitable depends on how your horse treats its gear in the field.
Fly veils for riding should fit well, because poorly fitting models can slip off the head even when the horse shakes its head. Many masks can be washed at 30 degrees and air dried, but always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
