What are rubber bit guards used for?
Rubber bit guards prevent the bit ring from sliding through the horse’s mouth and give the bit more stability. They lie between the ring and the corners of the mouth.
Even with guards, the following still applies: the ring of a loose ring snaffle must be able to slide freely and must not pinch the corners of the mouth. A bit of the correct width is essential. Rubber guards do not make up for the wrong size.
How do I fit the curb chain correctly?
The curb chain is fitted correctly when, with the reins taken up, the shanks of the curb bit form an angle of about 30 to 45 degrees to the line of the mouth. The links of the chain are first turned so that they lie flat against the lower jaw.
If the chain is too short, the curb bit stands too steeply and puts strong pressure on tongue and bars. If it is too long, the curb bit drops through and has a stronger effect on the poll. At the beginning you should ask experienced trainers to show you how to attach it.
Is a curb chain guard useful?
Yes, a curb chain guard pads the sensitive lower jaw, which is covered only by a thin layer of skin. It distributes the pressure of the chain over a larger area.
According to the FN equipment rules for the German competition rules (LPO) a guard made of leather or soft rubber is permitted with a double bridle, and with some bridles it is even compulsory. The curb chain hooks must remain freely movable.
Am I allowed to wrap a bit in latex?
Since the 2026 edition of the FN equipment rules it has been permitted to wrap bits with latex at competitions, as long as the permitted bit thickness is not changed as a result. Where mullen mouth bits are not allowed, the wrapping must not turn a jointed bit into a mullen mouth bit.
Latex wrapping pads the mouthpiece and can be more comfortable for sensitive mouths. Observe how your horse reacts to it. At our bit fitting service you can find the right solution together with specialists.
