Take your time to test before you buy

Sprenger Test Centre

As an official Sprenger Test Centre we enable you to test bits and curb bits at home or in training before you make your final decision.

Test without risk, then decide

Every horse is different. A bit that is tried in the shop first has to prove itself in training. Some horses need several sessions to get used to a new mouthpiece, others show straight away whether it suits them. It is therefore best not to buy a bit in passing. This is exactly why you can take selected bits and curb bits home from us as an official Sprenger Test Centre on payment of a deposit and test them at your leisure on your own horse, in your usual training and environment. This gives you confidence and saves you money in the long term because you end up buying the bit that really fits.

How it works

Uncomplicated, transparent and fair: explained step by step.

  • Advice in the shop: together with our expert Julia Lühr we select 2–3 suitable bits
  • Leave a deposit equal to the price of the respective bit
  • Testing period by arrangement, usually 1–2 weeks
  • Return or purchase with the deposit credited
  • With purchase: €25 discount in combination with a detailed bit fitting
  • Fair and transparent process with no hidden fees

What you can test

You have access to the most common Sprenger bits and curb bits in many different versions. If a bit you want is not available in the Test Centre, we can order it. We only offer plastic curb bits for testing, not plastic snaffle bits, because the wear is too high.

Frequently asked questions

What bit size does my horse need?

The width is correct if there is at most 3–5 mm space on each side between the corners of the mouth and the bit ring. For the thickness, the two-finger test helps: place two fingers in the mouth where the bit lies. If you feel pressure when the incisors close, the mouthpiece should not be thicker than 16 mm. We select suitable test bits together during the consultation.

How do I notice during testing that a bit fits?

You can recognise a suitable bit by the fact that your horse chews contentedly, seeks a trusting contact into the hand and relaxes over the back. Warning signs are head shaking, avoiding the bit, an open mouth, sore corners of the mouth or redness in the mouth. Give your horse a few sessions. In the event of injuries in the mouth please consult your vet.

How long can I keep a bit for testing?

The testing period is agreed individually and is usually 1–2 weeks. This allows you to try the bit in several sessions in your usual training and environment. If it fits, you buy it with the deposit credited. If it does not fit, you simply return it.

What happens to the deposit when I bring the bit back?

If you would like to buy the bit, the deposit is offset against the purchase price. Otherwise we refund your deposit in cash. The deposit is based on the price of the respective bit, so you do not pay anything twice and there are no hidden fees. If you combine the purchase with a detailed bit fitting, you also receive a €25 discount.
