Can I ride in outdoor shoes?
Only shoes that are at least ankle high and have a small heel are suitable for riding, so that your foot does not slip through the stirrup. The British Horse Society recommends a heel of at least about 1.3 cm.
A very chunky tread can get caught in the stirrup. If a sole has a tread, it should be offset and not run straight across the whole sole. Shoes made purely for walking or yard work with a coarse tread are therefore often unsuitable.
Why are trainers unsuitable for riding?
Trainers have no heel to keep your foot in the stirrup and offer hardly any protection if a horse steps on your foot. If you fall off, your foot can slip through the stirrup and get caught.
Shoes with hook-and-loop fastenings are also considered less suitable, because they can open too easily. For riding lessons, paddock boots with a smooth sole and heel are the safer choice.
Paddock boots or long riding boots: which is better?
Long riding boots stabilise ankle and calf more effectively, while paddock boots allow for more refined leg aids. According to Cavallo, an unstable ankle makes faults in your seat more likely.
Many riders combine paddock boots with half chaps. This gives you support on the leg and you can also wear the boots in the yard and for leisure. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) lists half chaps with short boots as an acceptable alternative to riding boots.
What should I look for in waterproof paddock boots for the yard?
For waterproof paddock boots, look for a membrane or a waterproof upper material and a sole that is also safe for riding. A smooth sole, a small heel and an offset tread make the boots suitable for both day-to-day yard work and the saddle.
Also check the space in the stirrup. According to the British Horse Society, there should be about 1.3 cm of space between the stirrup and the widest part of your foot.
