What belongs in a yard first-aid kit?
You should always have a digital thermometer, bandaging material and a disinfectant. This includes sterile, non-linting wound dressings, cotton wool for bandaging, gauze swabs, self-adhesive bandages and adhesive tape.
A pair of curved bandage scissors, disposable gloves, tick remover, tweezers, cold packs and a torch are also practical. A notepad with a pen helps you record readings for your vet.
Which normal values should I know for my horse?
In adult horses over two years of age, the resting body temperature is between 37.5 and 38.2 °C, the pulse between 28 and 40 beats and the respiration between 8 and 16 breaths per minute.
Measure these values from time to time when your horse is healthy and relaxed, so that you will recognise deviations more quickly. In an emergency, your vet can assess the condition better if you can already tell them the temperature, pulse and respiration over the phone.
How do I correctly take my horse’s temperature?
With a digital thermometer in the rectum. Insert it far enough and hold it slightly at an angle against the mucous membrane wall, otherwise it will read too low.
Stand to the side of the hindquarters, not directly behind, and ideally have a second person hold the horse. If the temperature is clearly above the normal range or your horse shows other signs of illness, call the vet.
How often should I check the yard first-aid kit?
At least once a year, and also after each use. Dispose of expired products and restock used bandaging material immediately.
Medication belongs in a separate, dry cupboard that is out of reach of children and animals. Serious or longer-lasting illnesses and injuries must always be treated by a vet. The yard first-aid kit is intended only for initial treatment.
