How often can I wash my horse with shampoo?
Healthy horses should be washed with shampoo at most once a month, you can wash the tail about twice as often. Shampooing too frequently attacks the protective fat and sebum layer of the skin.
Possible consequences are irritated, dry skin and dandruff. For daily care, a brush and clear water on the legs are sufficient as long as it is frost-free.
Can I use a normal hair shampoo on my horse?
No, it is better to use a horse shampoo, because horses’ skin has different characteristics from ours. According to Pferderevue its pH value is roughly between 4.8 and 6.8, and horse sweat is slightly alkaline.
Products that are too acidic can disturb the protective mantle of the skin. Rinse out any shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water. Residues make the coat look dull and can trigger itching.
Does hoof oil help with dry, brittle hooves?
Hoof oil on its own hardly helps dry hooves, because brittle hooves lack moisture rather than fat. Fat and oil form a water-repellent film that does not let water in, but also does not let it out.
The following order is therefore sensible: first wet the hoof, then apply oil or grease to the still damp hoof. If problems persist, consult your farrier or vet.
Should I soak dry hooves regularly?
Frequent soaking is often not helpful for dry hooves, because the constant change between wet and dry can further damage the horn. You should avoid rapid changes in horn moisture as far as possible.
According to studies by Dr Melinda Duer the ideal moisture content of the hoof horn is about 25 percent. Such a hoof looks dry from the outside and is still well able to bear weight.
