Does my horse actually need supplements at all?
That depends mainly on the forage. If you feed good hay in sufficient quantity, you are already covering a large part of the requirement, and the choice of a mineral feed or supplement depends on what is lacking in the hay.
Nutrient levels vary greatly: depending on the hay, phosphorus is between about 1 and 5 g and calcium between 1.3 and 19.5 g per kilogram. A forage analysis shows what your horse is actually getting and prevents you from supplementing on guesswork.
Can you overdo it with supplements?
Yes, according to assessments by animal nutrition experts, horses are more at risk of oversupply than deficiency. The requirement for minerals is lower than many people assume.
Potential problems include an imbalance of calcium and phosphorus, too much vitamin A or an overdose of selenium, which can trigger hoof disease and lameness. For this reason, only combine several supplements after a ration calculation and discuss any abnormalities with your vet.
Do older horses or sport horses have different requirements?
Yes, both need significantly more of certain nutrients. In older horses the requirement for zinc and vitamin E can increase by up to 100 percent, and for selenium by 50 to 100 percent.
Sport and working horses need more magnesium, vitamin E and selenium for muscles and nerves. Horses that are still growing also have an increased requirement for blood formation and bone metabolism. A suitable supplement compensates precisely for these gaps instead of increasing everything across the board.
What do I need to consider with supplements before a competition?
Check the declaration, because some feeds contain substances that are prohibited in competition under the Anti-Doping and Medication Control Rules (ADMR). The German Equestrian Federation (FN) provides a search tool with more than 900 substances including recommended withdrawal periods.
Active ingredients are not always listed word for word on the label: chilli or paprika extract can contain capsaicin, and brewers’ yeast, brewers’ grains and malt sprouts can build up hordenine. Essential oils are only harmless in feed up to 0.5 percent. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer in writing.
