Which bridle size fits my horse?
The usual sizes are Pony (often in medium and large), Cob, Thoroughbred, Warmblood (Full) and Extra Full up to Draught. The names vary slightly depending on the manufacturer, so it is worth measuring.
For the cheekpiece, measure from the middle of the poll, about one centimetre behind the ears, down to the corners of the mouth. For the noseband, measure the circumference of the nose at the point where it will sit later. The browband is measured just below the ears, allowing a little extra on both sides.
How do I recognise a well-fitting bridle?
The headpiece sits behind the ears, is softly padded and does not put pressure on the poll. Anatomically shaped headpieces with cut-outs for the ears are particularly suitable for this, with the cut-out facing towards the ears.
The browband must not be too short, otherwise it pulls the headpiece against the ear cartilage. The cheekpieces should not lie on the cheekbones. The bit hangs so that, when you take up a contact on the reins, a small wrinkle forms at the corner of the mouth, without the horse looking as if it is permanently grinning.
Which nosebands are there on a bridle?
The usual nosebands are the drop, the cavesson, the flash, the grackle and the Swedish noseband. They differ in where the noseband sits and whether an additional strap runs under the bit.
Which noseband is allowed in which competition is regulated by the FN equipment rules for the German competition rules (LPO). Regardless of the shape, the following applies: there should be room for two upright fingers between the bridge of the nose and the noseband. The nasal bone is thin and sensitive at this point.
Rolled or flat: which is more comfortable for the horse?
For pressure distribution, wide, well padded straps are usually more favourable. Rolled straps naturally have a very small contact area, which makes pressure distribution more difficult.
However, very narrow, flat straps should also be additionally padded, especially at the poll and on the noseband. When buying, therefore focus less on the look of the browband and more on the padding and shape of the parts that lie directly on the horse’s head.
