When does my horse need a neck cover on its rug?
With sweet itch rugs a neck cover is standard equipment, with rain and winter rugs it is an extra that is especially worthwhile for clipped horses. It protects the neck from cold and wet or from insect bites.
A good neck cover should cover the entire neck without constricting. Side straps keep it in place so that it does not slip when the horse eats or moves.
What is a Lycra shoulder guard for?
A Lycra or fleece shoulder guard prevents the rug from rubbing at the shoulder and chest and rubbing the coat away there. The stretchy material fits closely and is worn under the rug, for example in the stable or during transport.
However, rubbed areas are often also a sign of a poorly fitting rug. Check the fit first: nothing should press on the withers and a shoulder gusset provides freedom of movement.
How much fill does the rug need at which temperature?
As a guideline: at around 10 °C a lightweight rain sheet without fill is sufficient, at 5 °C a fill of 50–150 g, at minus 5 °C 200–300 g. Unclipped horses usually manage with 50–100 g, fully clipped ones with about 200 g.
Too much warmth is also unfavourable: in tests, clipped horses under 300 gram rugs reached temperatures above 30 °C.
How do the rug and neck cover stay waterproof?
Reproof turnout and rain rugs including the neck cover after every wash so they remain weatherproof. Apply spray-on reproofer only once the material is completely dry.
Between washes, thorough brushing out is often enough. This preserves the waterproofing, which diminishes more quickly if you wash frequently. Dry rugs in the air and never in a tumble dryer.
