That is above all a question of how much grip you want in the saddle. A full seat runs from the knees over the inside of the thighs to the seat, a knee patch is only on the inside of the knee.

Both are available in leather or with silicone grip. According to the German Equestrian Federation (FN), whether you choose leather or grip is a matter of personal preference. If you want more grip in the saddle, you will usually go for a full seat. If you prefer more freedom of movement and less grip, a knee patch is the better choice.

Which material is suitable for summer and winter?

As a rule, the fabric should be nicely stretchy both across and lengthways, microfibre fabrics are particularly good for this. In summer, light, breathable fabrics are comfortable.

For winter there are thermal riding breeches, for example in a thermal version or made from softshell, which protect against wind and cold. If you ride outdoors a lot or spend time in a cold yard, a summer pair and a winter pair will see you comfortably through the year.

How do I wash riding breeches with silicone grip?

Turn them inside out, close all zips and wash at a maximum of 30 °C. Fabric softener and tumble dryer are a no-go, and so is ironing, because heat damages the elastic fibres.

Take the breeches out of the machine straight after washing, turn them the right way out and hang them up to dry. This keeps the silicone grip grippy and the fabric in shape. Also follow the care label for the specific model.

How do I find the right size for men’s riding breeches?

Men’s riding breeches are usually offered in German clothing sizes such as 48 or 50, although the cut varies between brands. Some manufacturers offer size calculators that take height, weight and age into account.

The breeches fit correctly if they are close-fitting and smooth with no wrinkles and no seams pressing on the inside. In the Ahrens Reitsport shop you can try on and compare different models.
