Which rein material feels best in the hand?
That depends on your preferences: leather reins give a refined feel, rubber reins offer the most secure grip, and webbing reins feel grippy and stable in your hand. According to a test by Cavallo, leather reins also feel comfortable without gloves.
In wet conditions leather reins can become slippery. Rubber reins then give better grip. They are therefore a popular choice for hacks in all weathers.
Reins with or without stops: which is better?
Stops give your hand a firm hold and prevent the rein from slipping through, reins without stops are easier to lengthen and take up again. Leather reins usually come without stops and are narrower than webbing reins.
If you are just learning to maintain an even contact, you may like the orientation provided by stops. If you often allow the horse to chew the reins out of your hand, you will appreciate smooth leather.
How long do reins for a large horse need to be?
For Warmbloods you often need reins with a total length of more than three metres so that you can give your horse enough freedom at walk and on a long rein. Cavallo cites this value in its test of leather reins as the minimum length for Warmbloods.
The decisive factor is that your horse can stretch forwards and downwards. For ponies and smaller horses, correspondingly shorter reins are sufficient.
How do I know that I am holding the reins short enough?
The rein length is correct if you are sitting balanced over your centre of gravity and your elbow, hand and the horse’s mouth form a straight line. Your upper arms should hang loosely by your sides.
Many riders hold the reins too short. In walk the horse needs enough length to stretch its neck, and in extensions your hand should be able to give clearly.
