Do I need a short girth or a long girth?
That depends on the saddle: short girths suit saddles with long girth straps, typically dressage saddles, while long girths suit saddles with short straps such as show jumping and eventing saddles. Short girths are usually 40 to 90 cm long, long girths 90 to 150 cm.
With a long girth the buckles lie protected under the saddle flap, with a short girth they lie below it. This means there is nothing pressing under the rider’s leg.
How do I measure the correct girth length?
For a short girth, measure on the horse from the lower edge of the saddle flap on one side, under the belly, to the lower edge on the other side and subtract 30 cm. The best time to measure is after a few minutes of walk with the horse already girthed up.
For a long girth, measure from the second hole from the bottom of one girth strap, around the belly, to the other side. The buckles should lie above the elbow so that nothing gets pinched.
What is the benefit of an anatomically shaped girth?
An anatomical girth is cut narrower behind the elbow and is intended to give the horse more freedom there. According to an expert in Pferderevue, this is particularly necessary if the girth position lies far forward.
Girths that are widened in the middle are intended to distribute the pressure on the sternum more evenly. Whether this works depends on the material and the horse’s conformation. If your horse has girthing issues it is worth asking a saddler or vet to have a look.
Girth with elastic on one side or on both?
Experts recommend elastic on both sides or none at all, because elastic on only one side creates uneven tension around the ribcage. Elastic inserts give a little and are often used for young or girth-sensitive horses.
The disadvantage is that it is easy to over-girth with elastic. Tighten the girth in stages and rely more on feel than on force.
Which girth material is low-maintenance?
Synthetic leather, nylon and cord girths are the easiest to care for, because they are simple to wash. Neoprene is also straightforward, although many horses sweat heavily underneath it.
Leather adapts to the horse’s shape and lasts a long time, but needs regular care. Permanently attached sheepskin must be kept thoroughly clean, otherwise it mats and loses its pressure-distributing effect.
