How do I tie up my horse safely?
With a quick-release safety knot that can be opened immediately by pulling on the loose end of the rope. To do this, pull a loop through the tying ring and knot it so that the rope comes completely free of the ring in an emergency.
The German Equestrian Federation (FN) teaches this knot even to beginners. The reason: if a tied-up horse panics, you must be able to free it quickly without moving into the danger zone. Never tie up by the bit.
How high should I tie up my horse, and how long should the rope be?
As high as possible, ideally with a tying ring above the withers. The higher the tying point, the lower the risk of the horse stepping on the rope and the less pressure is placed on the poll if it does pull.
The rope should be long enough for the horse to turn its head slightly to the side, but not to turn around. If you tie too long, the horse can get a leg over the rope or flip it over its poll, which can quickly trigger panic.
Panic clip or snap hook: which is safer?
A panic clip can be opened even under load, a snap hook cannot. If a tied-up horse is hanging on the rope with all its strength, you can still release it quickly with a panic clip.
Other experts recommend sturdy snap hooks and in an emergency release the horse using the safety knot. In both cases it is important that the clip is robust, because a frightened horse can generate a good 500 kilograms of pulling force.
Which material is suitable for a tying rope?
Cotton ropes are considered a good choice because they break under relatively low load, around 170 to 190 kilograms. This means they act as a weak link before the headcollar or poll is overloaded.
A very tear-resistant rope, on the other hand, hardly gives way, so in an emergency the headcollar or tying point carries the entire load. You should therefore combine it with a panic clip or another weak link. It is also important that the surface is pleasant and grippy so the rope lies securely in your hand, even with gloves, and does not jam when you release it.
