What does my child need for their first competition?
For a competition under the German competition rules (LPO) your child needs a show jacket, show shirt with stock or tie, light-coloured riding breeches, riding boots or paddock boots with half chaps, riding gloves and a riding helmet. The FN packing list also mentions, depending on the class, a body protector, riding whip and hairnet.
Spare clothing and weather protection are also on the FN packing list and are particularly practical with children. The schedule (show notice) states exactly what is required.
Does my child have to wear show wear in introductory classes?
Not always. In some introductory classes under the German rules for grassroots competitions (WBO), functional riding clothing, riding boots or paddock boots and a riding helmet are sufficient. This makes getting started easier and more affordable.
The schedule (show notice) of the respective class is always decisive. Anyone who later wants to compete under the German competition rules (LPO) will then need the full show wear with show jacket and light-coloured riding breeches.
Is my child allowed to wear paddock boots with half chaps at a competition?
Yes, according to the FN paddock boots with half chaps are an acceptable alternative to long riding boots. Only dark colours are allowed in the ring, that is black, dark brown or navy.
The paddock boots must be at least ankle high and have a small heel. Make sure that the spurs, if needed, sit securely on both half chaps and paddock boots.
What should I look out for in a children's riding helmet for competitions?
The children's helmet must comply with a valid safety standard such as EN 1384 and fit so well that it sits firmly even without the chinstrap done up. According to the FN, you should be able to fit about two fingers between chin and strap.
Children's heads grow, so a fit check before every season is worthwhile. During our helmet fitting service, we check the fit and standard together with you.
