What is the difference between a fly rug and a sweet itch rug?
A fly rug protects against annoying insects, whereas a sweet itch rug is made especially for horses with sweet itch and covers almost the whole body. It has a long neck cover, a large belly flap and a wide tail flap.
The fabric is woven so densely that even tiny midges (Culicoides) cannot get through. These insects trigger sweet itch. If you have any questions about treatment, your vet is the right person to ask.
Why is the belly flap important on fly rugs?
A large belly flap protects the midline of the belly, where midges particularly like to bite. Horses with sweet itch in particular often suffer from itching there.
A long neck cover is also worthwhile, because the mane crest and neck are typical areas. Midges are mainly active at dawn and dusk, so good protection is especially important in the morning and evening.
What colour should a fly rug be?
Light-coloured fly rugs are usually more comfortable on sunny days because they heat up less. Many models are made from fine-mesh, breathable polyester with UV protection.
You should also look for tear-resistant material if your horse is turned out with others. This means the rug will withstand minor scuffles.
How often should I wash a fly rug?
You should wash a fly rug about every two to four weeks during the season. Use low temperatures and mild detergents without harsh additives.
Let the rug air-dry, because heat can damage the fine fabric. While you do this, check the seams and fastenings. You determine the size in the same way as for other horse rugs, using the length of the horse.
