What should I look for in a men’s riding and yard jacket?
Important features are weatherproof material with taped seams, an extended back that covers your lower back in the saddle, and an adjustable hood. An elastic hem keeps the warmth close to your body.
Softshell jackets are water-repellent and pleasantly flexible, parkas and quilted jackets keep you warmer on cold days. Make sure that the jacket does not ride up when you are riding and that the sleeves allow enough freedom of movement for your rein contact.
Can a riding jacket be worn over a body protector?
It should, because according to the German Equestrian Federation (FN) you wear the body protector under the jacket. If you often ride cross-country, it is best to try on a new jacket while wearing your body protector.
The jacket must not be tight or restrict the body protector’s freedom of movement. A body protector should fit close to your body, so the jacket needs a bit of extra room in the upper body. With air vests the lanyard must remain free.
How do I wash a technical jacket with a membrane?
Regularly, because dirt and sweat reduce its performance. Wash the jacket on a delicates cycle with liquid detergent and without fabric softener, powder detergent or bleach, and rinse it twice.
Afterwards, line dry it or tumble dry at a low temperature. Always follow the temperature advice on the care label. Before washing, close all zips and hook-and-loop fastenings.
When do I need to reproof my jacket?
When water no longer beads off the outer fabric, but forms dark patches. Often it is enough to wash the jacket and then put it in the tumble dryer for about 20 minutes or iron it with a cloth at a low temperature, which reactivates the existing waterproofing.
If that no longer helps, refresh it with a spray or a wash-in product. The care label will tell you which option is suitable. Sprays are ideal for treating heavily exposed areas such as shoulders and sleeves in a targeted way.
