Which standard should a body protector meet?
The European standard EN 13158 in the 2018 version, specifically with Level 3. This protection level is recommended by the German Equestrian Federation (FN) for riding, and it is intended for normal riding, competitions and work with horses.
Level 1 offers the lowest protection and is intended only for licensed jockeys. Level 2 is intended only for situations with a very low risk. In Great Britain, the older 2009 label has no longer been permitted at many competitions since January 2024.
How do I find the right size body protector?
You need the chest measurement at the widest point and a measurement over the shoulder. To take this, put a belt just below the ribs around your waist and measure from the top edge of the belt at the front, over the shoulder, to the top edge of the belt at the back.
Wear only a thin layer when measuring and pull the tape measure tight. The finished body protector should fit close to the body, be a little longer at the back and not restrict your freedom of movement. A forward roll on the ground is a good way to test the fit.
When do I need to replace my body protector?
After three to five years at the latest, depending on use and care, because the foam loses cushioning over time. After a serious fall, check the body protector immediately for dents in the foam.
Normally the foam regains its shape within about 30 minutes. If a dent remains visible, the level of protection is compromised and the body protector must be replaced. Hang the body protector on a hanger with the zip closed and do not store it in a hot car or a damp tack room.
Is an air vest an alternative?
An air vest adds to your protection and is connected to the saddle via a lanyard. If the rider leaves the saddle, the connection tears and the vest inflates instantly.
At German competitions, body protectors and airbag jackets are allowed at all levels. For jumping fixed obstacles in cross-country, a body protector is compulsory. Ask for advice when choosing, because protective equipment never replaces solid training and a secure seat.
