What equipment do I need for my first riding lessons?
To begin with, a suitable riding helmet, sturdy shoes and close-fitting trousers are enough. The shoes should be at least ankle-high, have a continuous sole and a small heel so that your foot does not slip through the stirrup.
A bicycle helmet is not suitable for riding. According to the German Equestrian Federation (FN), a body protector is not necessary when you are learning to ride. Later on, riding boots or paddock boots with half chaps are a good investment, as they give you more stability and better leg contact.
Why should riding breeches be close-fitting?
Because folds and thick seams on the inside rub when you ride and quickly cause sore spots. Riding breeches therefore fit smoothly against the leg and have no annoying inner seams.
Modern designs are stretchy, breathable and easy-care. A knee patch or full seat provides more grip in the saddle. Especially for longer riding lessons, well fitting breeches make a noticeable difference.
What protective equipment is important for hacking?
For hacking, the German Equestrian Federation (FN) recommends a break-proof and shatterproof riding helmet with three- or four-point fastening and a body protector. Riding boots or paddock boots prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup.
For body protectors, the German Equestrian Federation (FN) recommends standard EN 13158 with Level 3. The body protector is mandatory when jumping fixed cross-country fences. Before every ride out you should also check your saddle and bridle to make sure they are in safe condition.
Why do I need riding gloves?
Riding gloves protect your hands from rubbing and blisters and give you a non-slip grip on the reins. This means your rein aids stay light and precise, even when it is wet or your horse is strong in the hand.
A good fit is important. The gloves should sit close without pinching your fingers. There are also clothing rules for competitions, for example dark colours for boots. The best way to choose many items is to try them on directly. You can try things on in the Ahrens Reitsport shop in Tangstedt.
