Why professional bit fitting?
The bit is one of the most important links between rider and horse. An ill-fitting bit often leads to problems that at first you may not recognise as bit-related: lack of throughness, leaning on the rein, ducking behind the vertical, constant opening of the mouth, tongue issues or even damage to the mucous membranes. The anatomical differences between horses are enormous: tongue thickness, bars, corners of the mouth and jaw size vary considerably. The wrong bit can distort the rider’s aids, cause performance issues and in the long term impair your horse’s health. Sound bit fitting is therefore an investment in rideability, suppleness and your horse’s wellbeing.

We take time for you and your horse, whether in our shop or directly at your yard.
- Arrange a yard appointment by phone or email: we coordinate place and time flexibly
- Visit to the shop in Tangstedt or on-site consultation with your horse at the yard
- Anatomy check: tongue, bars, corners of the mouth and jaw are assessed
- Different bits are tested and compared directly on the horse
- Detailed recommendation with professional explanation, including alternatives
- Sprenger test bits available to hire against a deposit so you can try them out in peace in your own training

How does a bit fitting work?
After arranging an appointment by phone the consultation takes place directly with your horse at the yard. We assess the anatomy (tongue, bars, corners of the mouth, jaw) as well as how the current bridle and bits fit, test different bits directly on the horse and give a professional recommendation including alternatives. A consultation lasts approx. 30–45 minutes.
How much does a bit fitting cost?
The consultation in our shop in Tangstedt is free of charge. An on-site consultation at the yard costs €80 flat rate plus €0.50 per kilometre from 20 km distance from Tangstedt. When you subsequently buy a bit in our shop you receive a €25 discount.
Can I try bits at home?
Yes. Through our Sprenger Test Centre you can take bits and curb bits home against a deposit and try them out in peace in your own training. This way you can make sure that the bit really suits your horse before you make a final decision.

What are the signs of an ill-fitting bit?
Typical signs are lack of throughness, leaning on the rein, ducking behind the vertical, constant opening of the mouth, tongue issues or even damage to the mucous membranes. Distorted rider aids or performance issues can also be due to an ill-fitting bit. In all these cases a professional bit fitting is worthwhile.
