How do I measure correctly for leather riding boots?
You need three measurements: shoe size, leg height and calf circumference. To measure the height, stand with your leg slightly bent and measure from the middle of the kneecap, down the outside of the leg to the floor. Measure the calf circumference at the widest point with the tape measure pulled snugly.
Wear riding breeches and riding socks while measuring, stand with your weight evenly distributed and take your measurements again before every purchase of new riding boots. Also pay attention to the time of day, because calves are usually slimmer in the morning than in the evening.
How tall should new leather riding boots be?
New leather riding boots should feel rather tall and tight, because the leather becomes softer as you break them in and the leg drops a little. How much depends on how soft the leather is. One manufacturer, for example, recommends adding about 2.5 cm to the measured height.
In the end, the leg should finish close to the back of the knee and fit closely around ankle and calf. If you are between two sizes, manufacturers tend to recommend the tighter and taller option so that the boot does not become too wide after breaking in.
What is the difference between dressage, jumping and all-purpose boots?
The difference is mainly in the leg. Dressage boots have a reinforcement on the outside, which gives the leg stability for a long, still leg, often combined with decorative lacing at the front.
Jumping and all-purpose boots do without this reinforcement and are therefore softer in the leg. Manufacturers describe such models as versatile boots that are suitable not only for show jumping but also as comfortable everyday boots for leisure riders.
When are made-to-measure boots worthwhile?
If your calves are different widths on the left and right, or your measurements differ significantly from the standard charts. Part-measure boots allow a deviation of about 2 cm from the standard. For larger differences, fully made-to-measure boots are a good idea.
Off-the-peg boots may also not fit if you have very slim or very broad calves, or an unusual leg length. Ahrens Reitsport offers made-to-measure boots and half chaps. The measuring is done in our shop in Tangstedt and the order is then placed with the manufacturer.
