Fly rug or sweet itch rug: what does my horse need?
For horses with sweet itch a sweet itch rug is the right choice, for all others a fly rug is usually enough. The sweet itch rug is made of hard-wearing, elastic fabric and also covers the mane crest, dock and belly, in other words exactly the areas where the midges bite.
Typical features are a neck cover that stays closed even when grazing and a large belly flap. Fly rugs are lighter and fine-meshed, and the amount of neck and belly protection depends on the model.
When should I rug horses with sweet itch?
It is best to start rugging up before the midge season, which lasts roughly from April to October. Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to the saliva of biting insects, especially midges (Culicoides).
These midges are particularly active at dawn and dusk. Turnout at times of dry heat or strong wind and a sweet itch rug reduce the number of bites. Discuss with your vet which additional treatment makes sense.
What should I look for in the fit of a fly rug?
A fly rug fits well if it does not pull forwards when the horse grazes and stays in place even after rolling. An easily adjustable belly strap helps with this.
The material should be light, fine-meshed and very breathable. In practical testing, horses did not sweat under such a rug even at over 30 °C. Many fly rugs also provide UV protection. For broad horses it can be tight at the chest, so it is worth looking closely at the cut.
Do fly rugs with zebra stripes help against horseflies?
Yes, in one study significantly fewer horseflies landed on horses wearing a striped rug than on the same horses wearing a plain black or white rug. The stripes apparently disturb the horseflies when they try to land accurately from close range.
On the uncovered head there was no difference. A fly mask protects the head. Wash fly rugs and sweet itch rugs about every two to four weeks with mild detergent and check the seams at the same time.
