How much hay does my horse need per day?
At least 1.5 to 2 kg forage per 100 kg body weight, so for a 600 kg Warmblood around 15 kg hay daily. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) gives this amount as the lower limit for a healthy digestive system.
Leipzig University works on the basis of at least 1.5 kg dry matter per 100 kg body weight. This corresponds to about 1.7 kg hay or around 2 kg of the moister haylage. Many leisure horses already get enough energy from 2 to 2.5 kg hay per 100 kg.
How long can a horse go without feed?
No longer than four hours. The horse’s stomach produces gastric acid continuously and it is neutralised mainly by saliva, which is only produced when chewing.
Forage should therefore be offered throughout the day, for example via several hay rations or small-mesh haynets. Long breaks overnight can be avoided in this way. Fresh water must be freely available at all times, especially with dry hay and when the horse is working and sweating heavily.
How much hard feed can I feed per meal?
A maximum of 1 g starch per kilogram of body weight per meal, divided into at least three meals a day. This keeps the starch content per portion comfortably digestible.
As a rough guideline, animal nutrition experts quote a maximum of 0.3 kg hard feed per 100 kg body weight per meal and around 1 kg per 100 kg per day. Hard feed is only added if the requirement cannot be covered by forage.
Does my horse need additional salt?
Yes, for horses in normal work a salt lick that the horse can use as needed is generally sufficient. Horses in high-performance sport that sweat a lot need additional electrolytes, as recommended by the FN.
When sweating, a horse loses not only water but also sodium, chloride and potassium. A salt lick should therefore be freely accessible and the water supply must be adequate. At Ahrens Reitsport, orders over 15 kg are not shipped but are ready for collection at our shop in Tangstedt.
Does my horse need additional mineral feed?
Hay and grass supply many important nutrients but do not always cover the entire requirement. Gaps in supply can occur particularly with the following nutrients:
Zinc: skin, coat, hooves and immune system Copper: connective tissue, bones and blood formation Selenium: muscle function and cell protection Iodine: thyroid and metabolism Calcium and phosphorus: bones, teeth and muscle function Magnesium: muscle and nerve function Vitamin E: protection of muscle cells
When is mineral feed necessary? Horses mainly fed hay: often useful because trace elements in particular may be lacking. Horses at grass: depends on soil, grass quality and length of time at grass. Sport horses: the requirement for certain nutrients can increase through training and sweat losses. Horses with fortified hard feed: may not need additional mineral feed if the amount fed covers their needs.
