What else belongs in the grooming kit apart from brushes?
Besides a curry comb and body brush, your grooming kit should also include a hoof pick with brush, hoof oil with brush, a mane comb, a sweat scraper and soft cloths. You use the sweat scraper to remove the water from the coat after hosing down.
For sensitive areas such as eyes and nostrils you should use a separate soft sponge. Every horse should have its own grooming kit so that pathogens are not passed on via the equipment.
How do I apply hoof oil correctly?
The best way to apply hoof oil is with a brush on a cleaned, slightly damp hoof, as this helps the moisture stay in the horn. First you pick out the hooves, ideally before and after every ride, following the V-shape of the frog.
Hoof oils and hoof greases are intended to protect the horn from drying out and from cracks. If you notice obvious cracks or other changes, you should consult your farrier or vet.
How do I plait the mane for a competition?
For the classic competition mane, you divide the mane into small plaits at regular intervals and roll them up into buttons. For this, the mane should be about 10–20 cm long.
In the past the buttons were secured with needle and sewing thread, but today small plaiting bands fix the plaits at the roots. This is quicker and the bands come in many colours, sometimes also with glittering stones.
How do I care for a sheepskin grooming glove?
You wash sheepskin grooming gloves according to the manufacturer’s instructions with a special wool detergent. While they are drying, you should keep kneading the fleece so that it stays soft and fluffy.
Plastic accessories are easier to care for. You can clean them with warm water and soft soap or wash them at 30 degrees in a laundry bag. You should dry metal parts immediately after cleaning so that no rust forms.
