What is a gilet useful for when riding?
A gilet keeps your core warm and gives your arms full freedom of movement, which is comfortable in the saddle and for yard work. Lightly padded gilets are well suited as a mid layer in a layering system.
In spring and autumn many women riders wear a gilet over a technical top, in winter under a jacket. This means you can adjust the warmth flexibly to the weather and your level of activity.
What do cuin and 90/10 mean for down gilets?
The cuin value describes the fill power of the down. The higher it is, the better it insulates in relation to weight and volume. Values from around 650 cuin are considered very good quality.
The specification 90/10 means at least 90 percent down and 10 percent feathers. The feathers support the down. The Responsible Down Standard (RDS) label stands for audited supply chains without live plucking and force-feeding.
Down gilet or synthetic gilet for the yard?
For the yard a synthetic gilet is often the better choice, because it still keeps you warm when damp and is easier to care for. Down loses its loft and therefore some of its insulation when it gets wet.
Down gilets, on the other hand, offer a lot of warmth with very little weight. If you sweat a lot or work outside in drizzle, there is much to be said for synthetic.
What is a hybrid gilet?
A hybrid gilet combines different materials in one garment, for example a quilted, insulating front with stretchy softshell in other areas. This way it combines warmth with freedom of movement and weather protection.
Softshell is usually wind resistant and water repellent, but not fully waterproof. For riding this combination is comfortable, because you can move freely and are still well protected.
