Kids' Half Chaps

Half chaps in children’s sizes, the easy first step before long riding boots.
How do I measure half chaps for my child?
For half chaps you need two measurements: the calf circumference at the widest point and the length from the floor to the back of the knee, minus the heel height of the paddock boots. Measure while seated on a straight chair, with the knees at a right angle.
Your child should wear the riding breeches, riding socks and the paddock boots they ride in. Use both measurements to find the size in the manufacturer’s chart.
How tight should children’s half chaps be?
New half chaps should fit close to the leg, because the material will give a little over time and slip down slightly. The zip can be a bit firm to close at first.
The material stretches with wear. If half chaps are already loose when you buy them, they will become too wide after a while. If in doubt, choose the closer-fitting size from the chart.
Are half chaps a good alternative to riding boots for children?
Yes, half chaps with paddock boots are, according to the German Equestrian Federation (FN), an acceptable alternative to long riding boots. They support the calf in a similar way to the leg of a riding boot.
For children this is practical because the paddock boots can also be worn in the yard. At competitions only dark colours are allowed, so black, dark brown or dark blue. If spurs are used, you must ensure they sit securely.
Do half chaps fit every paddock boot?
Half chaps fit with most riding paddock boots, but the length must suit the heel height of the boot. This is why you subtract the heel height when measuring the length and measure with the paddock boots your child actually wears.
Models with stretchy inserts adapt better to different legs. This is an advantage for growing children because the half chaps offer more leeway.
