Bandages or brushing boots: what protects my horse better?
Both mainly protect against external injuries such as knocks or scratches, but they do not support or relieve the leg. Bandages are 1.8 to 3 m long and 10 to 15 cm wide wraps made of wool, cotton, fleece or elastic material.
Brushing boots are usually made of leather, plastic or neoprene with foam or felt padding and are quicker to put on. Bandages, on the other hand, adapt very closely to the leg. Which option is sensible depends on the horse, the work and how practised you are in bandaging.
How do I bandage correctly?
Evenly firm, neither too tight nor too loose, and with the hook-and-loop fastening on the outside. You wrap from top to bottom around the fetlock.
Bandages that are wrapped too tightly can cause pressure necrosis, meaning tissue that dies off. That is painful, and white hair often grows back permanently at that spot. Bandages that are too loose slip and can come undone. It is best to practise bandaging under supervision.
When does my horse actually need bandages?
Leg protection makes particular sense for young or still unbalanced horses, for lunging, for show jumping, cross-country and when the horse is learning new movements. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) recommends the principle: as much as necessary, as little as possible.
Remove leg protection again directly after training. Heat builds up under bandages and brushing boots, and tendons recover less well at elevated temperatures.
Do fleece bandages get too warm?
They do in fact generate a lot of heat. In studies, fleece bandages produced the highest temperatures on the leg among the leg protection options tested. They should therefore only be worn during work.
Also make sure your bandages are clean. Sand in the material rubs, and germs can be transmitted from horse to horse via dirty leg protection. Wash bandages regularly and keep the hook-and-loop fastenings free of hair and dirt, otherwise they will no longer hold securely.
