When is an exercise sheet useful when riding?
An exercise sheet is especially worthwhile for clipped horses that need to be warmed up in cold weather. It keeps the back and quarters warm so that the muscles do not get cold.
The Pferderevue recommends at least 15 minutes of warm-up time in winter, or better still 20 minutes. Clipped horses should wear a rug in very low temperatures during this time. When hacking out in winter, an exercise sheet is also a sensible piece of equipment for clipped horses.
Fleece or waterproof: which exercise sheet do I need?
For the indoor arena, a fleece exercise sheet is usually sufficient, while for hacks in the rain a water-repellent outer material is the better choice. Soft fleece keeps the muscles warm before and after training.
Exercise sheets with a waterproof outer fabric keep the quarters dry. Many models combine both: a robust outer fabric and a soft fleece lining on the inside.
How should an exercise sheet fit?
A well fitting exercise sheet lies behind the saddle or under the saddle flap and does not interfere with your leg aids. A fillet string prevents the rug from sliding forwards in wind or movement.
Make sure that the rug does not pull tight over the quarters and that the horse can step well underneath itself. Choose the size as you would for other rugs, according to the length of your horse.
Does an exercise sheet for hacking need reflectors?
Reflectors on an exercise sheet for hacking are highly recommended in the darker months because drivers can see horse and rider earlier. Especially at dusk, reflective areas on the horse are much more noticeable than dark fabrics.
There are exercise sheets in high-visibility colours or with reflective stripes. Combined with reflective clothing for the rider, you are easily seen in traffic.
