Which standard should a body protector for children meet?
Look for a body protector certified to EN 13158 Level 3, because this level is intended for riding. Level 1 is only designed for jockeys on the racecourse, Level 2 only for very low-risk conditions.
In the United Kingdom, the BETA 2018 Level 3 standard is also recognised as the highest level of protection for children. Older body protectors with a 2009 label are no longer accepted by many organisations there.
How do I find the right size for my child?
The size of a body protector is determined by your child’s chest, waist and back length. Manufacturers such as USG provide charts using these three measurements.
The body protector should fit snugly and can be adjusted with hook-and-loop fastenings at the waist and shoulders. Have the fit checked in a specialist shop if possible. In our shop children can try on different body protectors.
How often do I need to check my child’s body protector?
Check the fit regularly, because children grow and a body protector that fitted in spring may no longer provide full coverage by autumn. At the very least, it is worth trying it on again after every growth spurt.
After a serious fall, check the foam for dents. It will expand back within about 30 minutes. If a dent remains visible, the protection in that area is lost and the body protector must be replaced.
What is the difference between a back protector and a body protector?
A back protector mainly protects the spine and is often certified to EN 1621-2. A body protector certified to EN 13158 Level 3 protects the back, chest and sides all round. For riding, the body protector certified to EN 13158 is the recommended standard.
On cross-country rides over obstacles a body protector is compulsory according to the German Equestrian Federation (FN). Put the body protector on a little while before riding so that the material can adapt to your body warmth.
