What colour does a show shirt need to be?
The classic choice is a white or light-coloured show shirt with a collar, worn with a stock, a tie or a cravat. Many designs have a white stand-up collar where you can fasten the stock pin.
The binding requirements are set out in the German competition rules (LPO) and in the schedule for your class. Check there before you buy, especially if you like a coloured design.
Am I allowed to wear a short-sleeved show shirt at a competition?
Yes, show shirts are available with long and short sleeves, and many riders wear both versions under the show jacket depending on the weather. What matters is that the shirt goes smartly with the jacket.
On very hot days the panel of judges can allow riders to compete without a jacket. In that case the shirt is fully visible, and a neat cut with a suitable collar becomes more important.
Stock or tie: what do I wear with a show shirt?
Ladies usually wear a stock with their show shirt, men a white tie. Discreetly embroidered ties and men’s stocks are also common.
The white stand-up collar of the show shirt is cut so that a tie or stock sits neatly. A stock pin keeps the stock securely in place.
What material should a show shirt be made from?
A good show shirt is made from a breathable, quick-drying technical fabric so that heat does not build up under the jacket. Synthetic fibres such as polyester wick sweat away quickly.
Wash technical shirts without fabric softener so that the fabric stays breathable, and follow the care label. Light-coloured shirts stay white for longer if you wash them promptly after the competition.
