Bits
100 products
Snaffle bits are a central component of the bridle. A distinction is made between single-jointed, double-jointed and straight bar bits. They are used for communication between rider and horse: with gentle and precise rein aids the rider uses the bit to influence the horse’s flexion, bend and direction.

How do I measure the correct bit width?
The simplest way is with a bit gauge, which you hold to the corners of the mouth on the left and right, or with a bit you already have. Pull the correctly buckled-on bit slightly apart to the side so that it lies straight in the mouth, and check the space on both sides.
With loose rings, for example on a loose ring snaffle, there should be no more than about 0.5 cm space between the ring and the corner of the mouth. Bits with fixed cheeks such as eggbutt or D-ring lie directly at the corner of the mouth and are usually chosen one size smaller.
Is a thick bit automatically milder?
No, that is only partly true. There is little space in the horse’s mouth: the toothless area between upper and lower jaw measures only about 3.5 to 4 cm, and the tongue already takes up a large part of this.
A simple test helps: place two fingers where the bit will lie. If you feel pressure when the incisors close, the bit should be a maximum of 16 mm thick. According to the German competition rules (LPO), snaffle bits for horses must be at least 14 mm and for ponies at least 10 mm thick.
Which material is suitable for a bit?
Solid bits made of stainless steel or copper alloys have proved their worth. Stainless steel is robust, corrosion resistant and easy to maintain, but does not additionally encourage chewing.
Alloys with copper promote salivation and chewing activity. In the opinion of the German Equestrian Federation (FN), hollow, very light bits sit unsteadily in the mouth and can lead to tongue problems. Which variant is suitable depends on the individual horse and is best found out by trying it.
How do I recognise that the bit does not fit?
Typical warning signs are head tossing, opening the mouth, sore or pinched corners of the mouth and redness on the tongue or palate. You can recognise a well fitting bit by a contented horse that confidently seeks the contact.
Also pay attention to the teeth: there should be at least a finger’s width of space to the first molar. Wolf teeth and canine teeth must not touch the bit.
In our shop in Tangstedt we are happy to advise you on choosing the right bit. Please bring photos of bridle and bit on the horse’s head and, if possible, of the mouth, as well as the current bridle and bit with you.
In addition, we offer individual bit fitting with Julia Lühr directly at your yard or in the shop. We take into account the different anatomy of each individual horse and find the optimal bit.
We also run a test centre with the most common Sprenger bits and curb bits, so you can test the bit first and then buy it.
