Natural rubber or plastic: what is the difference?
Wellington boots made from natural rubber are considered more flexible and longer lasting than models made from petroleum-based plastics. High-quality boots are also made by hand in many individual work steps.
In return, rubber needs a little care: heat and direct sunlight can change its quality and colour. If you wear wellington boots in the yard every day, you benefit from the more comfortable, more flexible material.
How do I find the right size and calf width?
Measure your calf circumference at the widest point while sitting, with your knee at a 90-degree angle. Allow extra room if you tuck your trousers into the boot, because rubber hardly stretches.
There should be a little space in front between your toes and the tip of the boot. Your heel may lift slightly as you walk, but should not slip out completely. If you have broad calves, short rubber ankle boots are an alternative.
Which wellington boots keep you warm in winter?
For winter, lined models are suitable, for example with neoprene or fleece lining. Neoprene insulates well and is particularly suitable if you stand for long periods, for example when watching or in the arena.
Alternatively, you can wear unlined boots with thick thermal socks, in which case the size should offer enough room. For lined boots, check the calf width especially carefully, because the lining takes up space.
How do I care for wellington boots so that they last a long time?
Clean the boots after wearing with a brush and lukewarm soapy water and leave them to air dry, not on the radiator or in the sun. Crumpled newspaper inside speeds up drying.
Store wellington boots upright in a cool, dry, dark place. A care spray for rubber, applied several times a year, protects against drying out and cracking. Take the boots off with a boot jack instead of with the other foot, this is gentler on the heel.
