What is the difference between a snaffle bridle and a double bridle?
The snaffle bridle carries one bit, the double bridle carries two: a bradoon and a curb bit with shanks and a curb chain. Accordingly, you ride in a double bridle with two pairs of reins.
The bradoon is a single- or double-jointed bit with a thickness of at least 10 mm and is buckled up like a normal snaffle bit. The curb bit is chosen about 0.5 cm narrower than the bradoon so that both bits lie quietly next to each other in the mouth.
From what age is a horse ready for the double bridle?
The German Equestrian Federation (FN) recommends waiting until the horse is at least six years old and is working confidently and successfully at Elementary level. It should reach confidently into the contact, quietly accept restraining aids and already be able to carry itself in the beginnings of collection.
It is also important that the tongue lies quietly under the bit and that the horse can be ridden into a stretching outline at any time. Whether a snaffle or a double bridle is required in a test is regulated by the German competition rules (LPO), depending on level and schedule.
How should the curb chain of the double bridle be correctly adjusted?
It is correctly adjusted when the shanks of the curb bit, with a light contact on the rein, stand at an angle of about 45 degrees to the line of the mouth. This is how the FN magazine describes it.
There are also fixed measurements for national tests: the curb bit must be 14 to 21 mm thick, the bradoon 10 to 16 mm. The lower shank may be no longer than 10 cm, and the upper and lower shanks must be in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:2. When buying, pay attention to these specifications if you want to compete at shows.
How tight can the noseband be buckled?
Only tight enough that the horse is not restricted when breathing or chewing. As a rule of thumb, you should be able to fit two fingers between noseband and nasal bone. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) gives a simple test for this: the horse should always be able to take a treat from your hand and eat it.
How often this does not work in practice was shown by a study of 750 competition horses published in 2017. Only 7 percent of the nosebands met the two-finger rule, and on 44 percent the measuring device did not fit underneath at all.
