Grazing Muzzles

Grazing muzzles for good doers: airy, safe and with a built-in headcollar.

When is a grazing muzzle useful?

Above all for good doers and overweight horses and ponies that should still have turnout and movement in the herd. The grazing muzzle limits grass intake without taking the horse off the pasture completely.

In a study with ponies, grass intake with a grazing muzzle fell by an average of 83 per cent. Without a grazing muzzle, some ponies consumed almost two thirds of their recommended daily dry matter ration in only three hours.

How do I get my horse used to a grazing muzzle?

Step by step and under supervision. Before the first unsupervised turnout, check that your horse can graze and drink with the grazing muzzle.

Watch during the first few days to see whether the grazing muzzle rubs anywhere or the horse seems stressed. Also pay attention to behaviour in the herd, because a horse with a grazing muzzle can be hassled by others. If the grass is very short or very long, the horse may no longer be able to reach the forage.

How long can a horse wear a grazing muzzle?

Not permanently. Even horses that are used to the grazing muzzle need regular breaks without it. The best option is to discuss the daily wearing time with your vet.

Bear in mind that many horses eat particularly large amounts once the grazing muzzle is taken off, which partly cancels out the effect. Check the grazing muzzle regularly for wear and replace any damaged parts.

Does a grazing muzzle damage the teeth?

With long-term use, the teeth can wear down unevenly. You should therefore have the teeth checked regularly by a vet or an equine dental technician.

Also look out for pressure and rub marks on the bridge of the nose, chin and poll. Padded straps or sheepskin covers on the headcollar can relieve sensitive areas. A grazing muzzle that prevents eating completely is not recommended.
