How do I clean a plastic grooming box?
Empty the grooming box completely and wash it with warm water and soft soap. You can wash smaller plastic parts in a fabric bag in the washing machine at 30 degrees.
After a skin disease has occurred in the yard, clean the box and plastic parts with hot water and a fungicidal disinfectant. Fungal spores can be spread via the grooming kit, even if the affected horse is not yet showing any symptoms.
How often should I replace brushes and sponges in the grooming box?
You should replace sponges roughly every two months, because even cleaned sponges collect bacteria. Replace brushes with synthetic bristles as soon as the bristles are worn and no longer reliably pick up dirt.
Use tidying the grooming box as an opportunity to check all parts. Washing the entire contents once a month is a good guideline.
How do I prevent rust on metal parts in the grooming box?
Dry metal parts such as hoof picks or scissors immediately and thoroughly after every cleaning. Moisture in a closed box encourages rust.
You can remove small rust spots with penetrating oil. If a part is heavily rusted, you should discard it and replace it. Clean metal parts with a brush, water and soap.
Do several horses in the yard need separate grooming boxes?
Yes, every horse should have its own grooming box so that pathogens are not transferred from horse to horse via brushes and sponges. This is especially important in yards with many liveries.
After an illness in the yard you should regularly disinfect your hands as well as the grooming kit. This reduces the risk that you yourself spread pathogens further.
