Am I allowed to wear a hat under my riding helmet?
A normal knitted hat does not belong under your riding helmet, because it alters the fit. A helmet certified to EN 1384 only protects you if it sits firmly but comfortably directly on your head and can hardly move forwards, backwards or sideways.
Hats and headbands are therefore intended for use on the ground: when grooming, in the stable or on the way to the field. If you alternate between hat and helmet, always put the helmet on without a hat and readjust the harness system.
How do I keep my ears warm when riding in winter?
The safest option is a winter liner offered by the helmet manufacturer for your specific model. These liners replace the normal inner padding, sometimes have integrated ear protection against the wind and can be removed and washed.
Because they only fit certain helmet models, you should check in advance whether there is a version for your helmet. After changing the liner you need to check the fit again: put the helmet on, move it gently, and your eyebrows should move slightly with it.
Which material keeps you warm and dry at the yard?
Merino wool is particularly suitable for this, because it retains warmth while also absorbing moisture. Wool fibres can absorb water vapour up to about 35 percent of their own weight, twice as much as cotton.
This keeps your skin drier even during stable work. Wool also binds odour molecules and needs washing less often. Polyester by contrast only absorbs a fraction of this moisture.
How do I wash woollen hats and headbands?
On the wool cycle in the washing machine or by hand, using a wool detergent and following the care label instructions. Afterwards, dry the hat flat so that it does not lose its shape.
Wool hats should only go in the tumble dryer if the label explicitly permits this. Often it is enough just to air a hat overnight, because merino wool is naturally odour and dirt repellent.
