Does my horse actually need a rug in the field at all?
A healthy horse with a winter coat usually does not. Horses maintain their body temperature between about 0 and 25 °C without any significant use of extra energy, and unnecessary rugging interferes with their thermoregulation.
A turnout rug makes sense above all for older or ill horses and for clipped horses. Important: even a waterproof rug does not replace a shelter. In rain, wind and cold, horses need access to natural or built protection from the weather.
What do the denier and gram figures mean on turnout rugs?
The denier value (D) describes the strength of the outer material, the gram figure the amount of insulating fill. With the same type of fabric, a higher denier value means more yarn per thread and therefore a more robust material, although different fabrics cannot be compared directly on this basis.
For the fill, as a rough guide: 0 to 100 g is a light rug that mainly keeps the horse dry, 150 to 250 g a medium weight for cool autumn and winter days, and from 300 g upwards a heavy rug for severe cold and clipped horses.
How do I find the right rug size?
Use a soft tape measure to measure from the middle of the chest over the shoulder to the rear edge of the quarters. Then choose the size that comes closest to this value. Depending on where they are made, however, manufacturers measure differently, so it is worth checking the individual size chart.
Rugs that are too big are the most common mistake: they slip backwards and rub at the chest and withers. Rugs that are too small press on the shoulder and restrict movement. Check regularly under the rug for any pressure points or rubs.
How do I wash and care for a waterproof turnout rug?
First brush off hair and loose dirt thoroughly, then wash waterproof rugs, usually at a maximum of 30 °C. Higher temperatures can impair the function of the material.
After washing you should treat the rug with a suitable waterproofing product so that it remains waterproof. Only put the rug on a dry horse and only when the rug itself is dry, because moisture makes the fabric cling to the coat and encourages rubs. A rug that is too warm has the same effect because the horse sweats under it.
