Which spurs are allowed at competitions?
Since the 2026 FN equipment rules that accompany the German competition rules (LPO), spurs may be a maximum of four centimetres long in all disciplines, measured from the boot. Rowel spurs with points are no longer permitted.
You should therefore check any spurs you already have with a tape measure before the season. Because rules can change, it is worth checking the current FN equipment rules before every competition.
How long may a whip be in dressage and show jumping?
In dressage tests, according to the FN equipment rules that accompany the German competition rules (LPO), a riding whip up to 120 cm including the lash is permitted, in the show jumping arena a maximum of 75 cm. In the warm-up arena, show jumpers may also use a riding whip up to 120 cm for flatwork.
In cross-country, the 75 cm limit also applies in the warm-up arena. In the dressage phase of eventing, no riding whip is allowed in the test.
When does my horse need studs?
Studs give a shod horse more grip on slippery grass or hard ground, but they should only be used when they are really necessary. A slight slide of the hoof as it lands is part of the natural shock absorption, studs prevent this.
Choose the smallest studs that are sufficient. Pointed studs do not belong on the inside of the horseshoe, because the horse could otherwise injure the other leg. Your farrier will place the stud holes for this.
How long do studs stay in the horseshoe?
You screw in studs only shortly before the start and remove them again directly after the test. You should not load, transport or lead your horse on hard ground with studs.
According to Horse & Hound, large studs on hard ground for long periods can cause cracks in the hoof wall. Clean the studs after use and store them so that the thread does not suffer.
