What size does a stirrup need to be?
The stirrup is the right size if your foot can glide easily in and out and there is at least half a centimetre of space on both the right and left side. Your foot must not be wedged in, but it must also not be able to slide all the way through.
You should therefore try the stirrup with the boots you actually ride in. If your foot no longer fits comfortably in a thick winter boot, you need a wider stirrup.
What are safety stirrups?
Safety stirrups release the foot in the event of a fall so that you do not get caught in the stirrup. There are single-arm models with a flexible outer branch, stirrups with an elastic that releases under tension and models with a click mechanism.
For children, stirrups with a safety cage are often used to prevent the foot from sliding through. There are currently no binding test standards for the release mechanism, so you should pay attention to quality.
Stainless steel, aluminium or plastic: which material is good?
High-quality stirrups made of stainless steel withstand high loads. According to ehorses, their breaking load is at least 800 kg, in some cases over 1,600 kg. Cheap stirrups can rust or become brittle when exposed to temperature changes.
Stirrups made of plastic should be UV-resistant. A certain amount of weight has advantages, because a heavier stirrup hangs more steadily and is easier to pick up again after you have lost it.
What are stirrup treads for?
Stirrup treads give your foot grip and stability. Rubber treads also protect the saddle from scratches, while metal treads provide better grip in wet conditions.
Some treads can be replaced, others are permanently fixed. You should replace worn rubber treads in good time so that your foot does not slip.
